The sixth generation Corvette ZR-1 was the shot heard around the world. Suddenly, makers of super cars the world over were put on notice by an American made front engine sports car that could show its taillights to some very exotic machinery. Built from the bones of the already impressive Z06 model, the ZR1 was the same recipe, just with more of the ingredients. More horsepower, more performance, more braking, more handling, more mind-bending speed. The ZR-1 used the same lite weight aluminum frame rails of the Z06, however in place of the Z06's 505hp LS7 7.0L naturally aspirated V-8 went a LS9 6.2L supercharged V8 with 133 "more" horsepower. The Eaton R2300 twin lobe supercharger displaced 2.3 liters of air and forced it through twin brick intercoolers at 10.5psi to produce 638 horsepower and 604 lb-ft. of torque. Just like that, the ZR-1 became the most powerful Corvette ever produced, and the most powerful car in GMs history up until that point. Not content to just add more power, the engineers broke out the scales and shaved weight off the car through the use of carbon fiber for the roof, roof bow, hood, fenders, and front and side splitters. The brakes were upgraded with gigantic carbon ceramic discs with six piston front caliper and four piston rear calipers. These big brakes necessitated larger wheels and the true MVP here, Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 ZP radials that stick like gum in your daughter's hair. The rear tires measure a full 335mm (13 inches for us Americans) wide and help propel this beast of a Corvette to 60mph in just 3.4 seconds, through the 1/4 mile in 11.3 seconds, and on to a top track speed of a whopping 205 mph. Notice I said track, don't try that at home kids. Those big Michelins along with some ZR-1 specific suspension tuning and magnetic ride shock absorbers add up to 1.05g of cornering grip. The driver of a ZR-1 should be required to keep the windows up and seatbelt firmly fastened when cornering hard lest they be thrown free of the ride. This isn't all just hyperbole, the numbers alone cannot convey the amazing performance of this Corvette. The C6 ZR-1 was truly a world beating, quasi supercar, with a sticker price that totaled less than the options packages of some of its competitors from across the Atlantic.
