"Shelby"-The name hits home with even non automotive enthusiasts, thanks to the storied legends of his racing and sports car exploits that have been retold countless times and even turned into a Hollywood big screen production. It is the stuff of absolute legends, and any vehicle that Carroll had his hands personally upon are held in the same regard as the Holy Grail amongst the cognoscenti. This particular Mustang was built at Ford's Dearborn assembly plant on May 22, 1969 and shipped directly to Shelby's facility in Los Angeles to be converted to GT500 specification. This beauty received the full complement of GT500 modifications and options, and was sold to Minar Ford in Minneapolis, MN in late October of that year. A neat sidebar to the story of this car is that Shelby did not produce any 1970 GT500's, however the unsold remainder of 1969 models were re-vin'd under FBI scrutineering as 1970 models before being sent out to dealers with only the addition of a front chin spoiler and hood stripes to distinguish it from the 69' model year. Interestingly, this GT500 sat unsold until January 8th of 1971 according the Marti Report included with the car. It was first purchased by a Mr. Gregg Adams of Moorehead, MN, and from there it floated around Minnesota until the early 90's when it was purchased and moved to South Dakota and onto Nevada where it remained until being brought to Florida a few years ago. The car underwent a complete four year nut and bolt restoration around 1990 and was refinished Acapulco blue before being repainted yet again around 2019 in it's current and factory correct shade of T5 Candyapple Red. Wearing a set of period correct Firestone wide oval bias ply tires wrapped around factory five spoke alloy wheels with polished lips and Cobra center caps. The optional visibility group added separate front fog lights under the bumper, and combine with the front and rear spoilers, rear window louvers, side stripes, and side scoops to give this Shelby a very racy appearance. The interior is done is factory black knit and vinyl trim, with front bucket seats, tilt steering column, AM radio, tinted glass, woodgrain trim, and deluxe seat belts rounding out the options list. Under the hood is the legendary 428CI Super Cobra Jet V-8 with single Holley 4150 carburetor producing 335 horsepower and a whopping 440 lb. ft. or torque. This heavy duty engine was built to racing specifications with a special crankshaft and connecting rods to handle the abuse of high RPM drag racing. While the Cobra Jet and Super Cobra Jet share the same outputs, the internal parts differ greatly between the two with the SCJ being much better suited to drag strip duty. This GT500 was also equipped from Shelby with the Drag Pack option, and was originally equipped with the C-6 automatic transmission and a stout 3.91 rear gear with Traction-Lok. Power steering and power brakes round out the options list and make this beast of a muscle car easy to drive in modern traffic if you so chose. This GT500 is in excellent condition, is free of body damage, fit and finish are excellent, and the doors click shut easily. The engine, while powerful, is docile enough to street drive and starts with only a twist of the key. This fully documented GT500 comes with a binder full of history to include title history, appraisal report, service receipts, Elite Marti report, and the original Shelby dealer order sheet and original Shelby dealer invoice. It has been verified as a numbers matching and correct car, and is listed in the national Shelby registry. This is a blue chip, investment level automobile, and will only continue to appreciate rapidly in the coming years.
